Best friends for years, these ladies were tired of iPhone photos of themselves and decided for a glamour day out with a double glamour photoshoot! There was a lot of laughter and fun while they were at the studio, with curlers in their hair, new dresses with the tags still on, and lots of glittery jewelry to try on. With all this fun, it was easy to get lots of beautiful photos of these ladies.  We could imagine this would be a great idea for sisters, mother/daughter shoots, and any relationship you wish to celebrate. Our double makeover glamour photography photoshoots start with a professional makeup and hair artist in our studio. What she didn’t realize was that I was completely taken in by her beauty.

While I was over at her home chatting about the upcoming shoot she shared old newspaper clippings of when she headlined theatres, and talked of being on the stage performing old ’40s songs nightly. In her bedroom is a beautiful painting of her from when she was in her early twenties. Beautiful, long golden locks ran down her back at the time. Today, her hue is a dark red and cropped short with these wonderful wisps that float down in crazy angles. When I commented on how much I loved them she said she tells her hairdresser to do anything, “But don’t make me look like an average Orange County housewife!”

She is anything but ‘average’!

On the day of her shoot she radiated energy that I could only hope for, her eyes sparkled like the warm waters of the Italian coast, and when she danced she was enchanting. Her ‘magic veil’, as she called it, was a beautiful array of colors, like a sunset on the ocean. The chinese silk floated in soft ripples through the air as Diana twirled and danced.

Her final outfit was something she admitted that she wouldn’t have put together herself. It seemed to be too masculine for her, with high-waist trousers and a sleek collared blouse. But we added feminine touches to make it more ‘Diana’: large glamorous earrings, sky-high heels and we teased her hair into a high French twist. The look was elegant, sophisticated, and beautiful.

Come on ladies! Beauty is not just for the young – being gorgeous is a mindset. It’s time to remind yourself of that, and capture the beauty that you might have forgotten is there. What you will realize is that your beauty is always there – just changing as the years go by.

Emily is a High School Senior and an avid reader, dreamer, artist, singer, and poet. She didn’t want a traditional photoshoot, but wanted something unique that showed her how she was, right at that moment. To help prepare for the photoshoot, we looked at photos of styles she loved – retro 70s hair with big ‘cat’ eyes. Dark moods and humor, like ‘Emily the Strange‘. I collaborated with her on the style of the dresses and make-up so she would be happy with them.

On the day-of, she came with gowns that her mother wore when she was on stage singing old 40s hits, plus a number of other outfits she loved. I had also made two dresses for the photoshoot, which you can read more about below. For now, enjoy the video that shows Emily during her hair and make-up session, as well as the photos that she said were her ‘favorites’.

Making the Dress

Two of Em’s dresses were made for this shoot. The first was a black tulle skirt that I added to a tube top to create a ‘black princess’, something she had mentioned to me during our chat a week before the photoshoot.  The all black outfit was a beautiful contrast to the gold, traditional couch she lounged on.

The second dress was the one you see her wearing at the top of the hill. I had found the dress at a local thrift store and altered it into one ‘fit for a fairy’. Flowing fabric and lace to blow in the wind, along with the black tulle to add the fullness. It wasn’t something you would wear out to a dance, but it was a beautiful couture piece.

For that dress, Nirzhar had a vision of being at the top of a hill with the wind blowing the fabric in the breeze. It was the last shoot, and it was getting cold and the light was fading. We rushed up to the top of a near-by hill we call ‘kite hill’, but it’s actually where all the model airplane enthusiasts like to hang out. It has a perfect view of Aliso Viejo as well as the rolling green hills of Aliso Canyon Park. Emily fought goose-bumps from the cool early evening air as I waved the lace and fabric in the breeze to help Nirzhar get that last final shot.

When she and her mother saw it they gasped. Emily said, ‘You made my dream come true! I’m a fairy in Lord of the Rings!’ It will be a beautiful wall art for their home.

High School Senior Portraits – Orange County CA

I don’t think we’ve had a good photo of the two or us since that auspicious photo 16 years ago, and I am so happy that we finally took some last month. I love them, and I love seeing them on our walls among our other memories – with space around them for the many happy memories to come.

Family Photography Laguna Niguel Regional Park

The brothers were great on an early Saturday morning at the Laguna Niguel Regional Park. The grass was yellow from the few winter frosts we had, and the geese were waddling across the road giving us the evil eye as we tried to slowly move around them with our big, red minivan. The sun was bright and warm, and the small lake was full of early-morning fishermen. You could tell that it was going to be another glorious day in Southern Orange County, CA – and a perfect day for a children’s photoshoot.

To help get the boys feeling natural for the camera we had them first pose together – asking one to push against the other – a natural way to get them to have a bit of fun and get some natural smiles. We also asked for some ‘serious’ faces, which was a bit harder to do once they got going! But they were great sports. When we showed Mom & Dad the latest portraits of their two boys they decided on some of the more serious portraits for their wall – as well as the smiling ones. The serious side was one they rarely got to see.

One of my favorites, the one with the two boys larking around- the younger pushing on the eldest brother’s back- was made into a beautiful, yet simple necklace – something we now offer! Be sure to ask us about our sterling silver photography necklaces, bracelets and rings.

Our hair and make-up artist, Elsie Nettleton, did a fantastic job with my hair – including extensions and some fake lashes – first time ever wearing them! Then Nirzhar worked with me and I felt like a real model – directing me into poses that helped me look my best. Elsie was there the whole time to help fix my hair and make-up during each of the three style changes.

I worked on one of my own dresses – a gold ‘poofy’ dress that made me feel like a queen. For our glamours girls, though, I’ll make the dress for them if it’s needed – no need to bring out the needle and thread, ladies!

But sometimes, it’s the moment in-between the different poses that become a family favorite. There are some examples of that below.

It’s because we know these ‘in-between’ moments are so special, so important to the photoshoot, that we have two people on every photoshoot. Usually, I’m the one that poses you and your family, while Nirzhar is ready with the camera to capture those fleeting moments. If he was directing and getting materials and props together, he wouldn’t have the opportunity to capture them.

So why do we direct or pose at all? Because we know that there are many more ways to make you look great in a photo. With the tilt of your head we can get rid of that double chin (that you don’t actually have, but always seems to show up on snapshots). With shifting your weight to the back foot we shed pounds off your hips, and with the right hand placement we can help your arms look long and slender. We see what your good side is, and highlight it. Plus, once you’re in that pose, we take the photo, and then you relax and joke around with your family, that pose is still there – but you’re relaxed and that in-between moment is captured.

This helps us to get to know you, your family, and work together to bring about what you would like to create during the photoshoot. We may take a look at the walls your looking to cover with family portraits. We’ll find out what the children like, and what you love. Then we’ll piece together what would be a great portrait for your family. I’m so grateful to our clients to allowing us to do that in-depth discovery of their family so that we can develop an art piece that they simply love for generations to come.
